Thursday evening saw the year 10’s play their first league game of the season against Kineton. The team were hopeful of building on the cup performance before Christmas and start the season with a win.
Southam started well but couldn’t break down Kineton who were defending well. There were no real clear cut chances until a long ball over the defence allowed the Kineton striker to place the ball out of Henry’s reach into the bottom corner to give Kineton the lead. Southam continued to play good football and tried to exploit the full backs and carved out some good chances with Tom and Eric forcing the keeper into good saves. A good square ball from James gave Kasey time to shoot but his shot cannoned off the cross bar. Half time
Southam started the second half fantastically well and soon turned the score in their favour. The first goal came from a great pass by James into Eric who turned and shot into the corner. The second goal came from a defensive mix up which James capitalised on and scrambled the ball into the net. Unfortunately, as soon as the team found themselves 2-1 up a lucky cross-shot ended up in the top corner to level the game again. However, at this point Southam turned on the style and played some fantastic football. Kasey and Ruben linking well with James and Luca. A great through ball was latched onto by Eric who fired into the net. The fourth goal of the evening was created by Tom who used his blistering pace to beat 3 defenders and then unselfishly square the ball to Eric for a tap in for his hat trick. Southam continued to play great football, spreading the ball across the pitch to create more chances. A fifth goal came in the form of a penalty which Tom won after his shot was handled on the line. Eric returned the favour and allowed Tom to take the penalty which he dispatched into the roof of the net. The Kineton goalkeeper prevented further goals with some fantastic saves from James, Luca and Ruben’s long distance efforts. A final goal came from debutant Luca who found the top corner with a terrific volley. At this point the game looked to be won but Kineton scored 2 quick goals to make the last 5 minutes a little nervy. Full time score 6-4 to Southam.
In truth, a score line that appears a lot closer than it was. Southam played some fantastic football and created some wonderful opportunities. The second half was a fantastic display of football.
Man of the match goes to James who created 2 goals and scored himself.
Well done lads. See you all at training on Monday.
