Southam V Kenilworth
Gallant Southam battle to the end
In what will probably be the teams last outing for Southam College our Yr 10 team took to the pitch against a strong Kenilworth team. Unfortunately we were hit by some withdrawals before the match and a couple of no-shows on the day reducing our numbers to 13, but remaining team members more than made up for their absence with their effort and determination.
At the start of the game, the teams were evenly matched and Southam had the better of the territory and chances. We were unlike not to score on a couple of occasions, but Kenilworth possessed some strong and powerful runners in their centres, and just before the break they found the space that they hadn’t be afforded at the start of the half. Having initially been thwarted by a heroic tack from Spencer W, for which he ultimately had to leave the field, Kenilworth scored in the corner. Chasing the game a little, they found more space and scored twice more before the break to leave us with a mountain to climb in the second half.
The second half started in a similar vain. The effort and endeavour of our team couldn’t be faulted, but Kenilworth were able to find and exploit the spaces in our defensive line to score more tries. 3 fine solo tries from Nick H.(2) and Rhys B. gave us some reward for all the hard work, but the game finished 56-21, and Kenilworth inflict our first defeat of the season, leave us to ponder what might have been if we’d had a full strength team.
A huge thanks to all the team for their grit and determination today, Mr Bennett for refereeing not just today, but through out the season and an to Kenilworth for lending us some players in the second half. The Team can look back on their achievements and highlights, not just from this season, but from the last 4 years playing for Southam College, with a great deal of pride.
