Year 9 Cricket

Monday evening saw the year 9 cricket team finally play a game! Unfortunately, our previous 3 fixtures have all been postponed due to the bad weather. Southam travelled to Campion with a number of debutants in the side hoping to claim victory!
Southam won the toss and elected to field first. James P and Matt C opened the bowling and after their first spell had Campion 14-2. Southam continued to restrict Campion with few runs being scored off the bat. A number of runs were scored through wide deliveries but this didn’t deter Southam from taking wickets. Charlie picked up a wicket in his first over and kept the score tight. Jacob and Will both took wickets with their first ball of their bowling spells. Eric picked up a wicket through a good catch from Charlie. Oscar took a wicket after tempting the batsman into a big shot which James caught comfortably. The remaining 2 wickets came from sharp fielding from Kasey who ran both batsmen out. Archie, Ollie and James all bowled well despite not getting wickets. Jack kept wicket excellently in his first time doing it! End of Campion innings 66 all out from 15.2 overs.
Southam knew that if they didn’t throw their wicket away the target score was in reach. Matt and Oscar were instructed to keep their wicket intact for as long as possible.
The opening batsmen kept the scoreboard ticking over and were aided with some wide deliveries adding to the score. Matt scored a quick fire 19 before having to retire. Charlie entered the crease to join Oscar who had defended brilliantly. Between Charlie and Oscar Southam hit the winning runs in the 13th over without losing any wickets. A great team performance which deserved the victory.
Man of the match goes to Oscar for a great all round performance. A wicket, a brilliant one handed catch as well as batting for the entire Southam innings. Well done Oscar!
A very pleased Mr Turton
